‘Kalinga Eye Hospital & Research Centre’ (KEHRC) is committed to changing the current state of eye care in the underserved province of Orissa. KEHRC is a not for profit organization providing unpaid eye care services to those considered below the poverty line. Higher income patients pay a nominal fee which helps subsidize eye care for the poor.
Since its inception in 2002, KEHRC has been providing free, high quality eye care services to poor and underserved citizens of the Angul, Dhenkanal, Deogarh, Jagatsingpur, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Keonjhar, Bhadrak and Sambalpur districts of Orissa. As a result of our efforts, thousands of poor and marginalized people receive eye care and many regain the ability to see. By providing corrective lenses, treatment for eye diseases and surgery, KEHRC has helped thousands of people to regain their valuable eye sight.
KEHRC has demonstrated its commitment to providing eye care to rural areas of Orissa and has been recognized by both national and international organizations for its contributions to health care and community development. KEHRC is registered under the Clinical Registration Act of Orissa and is a unit of the National Youth Service Action and Social Development Research Institute (NYSASDRI). NYSASDRI is renowned for its contributions to rural community development in Orissa and has been accepted as an Associate Member of the United Nations Department of Public Information. It is also proved its credential by conducting huge no of quality eye surgeries, 197 outreach screening camps, 37000 school students screening on refractive error & low vision problems in a year time in 2007 & 2008.
KEHRC is the only eye hospital in central Orissa. As such, it serves the majority of patients located central to the province’s more highly populated coastal region. The staff and equipment at Kalinga are world class and the services provided go unmatched throughout the region. In order to serve the surrounding rural and deprived populations KEHRC organizes outreach camps thereby bringing eye care to the poor and breaking down transportation barriers. Current operations include 7 surrounding districts and have recently expanded to serve an additional 5.
Kalinga runs outreach camps in poor rural areas at regular intervals. In order to build faith in the organization and continue to help the poor KEHRC returns to the same locations every 3-4 months. This allows local villagers to become familiar with the system and attend an eye camp when necessary. Camps are run at many locations throughout central Orissa. Five times a week, a doctor, a paramedic, an ophthalmic assistant, and a counselor drive to a rural location where patients are screened, assessed and brought back to the hospital to undergo surgery when appropriate.
