Traditionally, when medication and non-invasive procedures are unable to relieve symptoms, Surgery is the only accepted and most effective treatment for a range of gynecologic conditions in and out of developed world. Traditional open gynecologic surgery, using a large cut to access the uterus and surrounding anatomy has been the standard practice for many years. This open surgery can bring significant amount of pain, trauma and a long recovery process. There is sometimes even a threat to the surrounding organs. Surgery causes lot of anxiety to the women.

Till recent times, laparoscopy was used by surgeons but it had its limitations. The surgical locations in cases of Gynecology are narrow and maneuvering in these areas with laparoscopic instruments is not easy. The very thought of Gynaecological surgery brought up images of pain, discomfort, extended time away from daily chores usually associated with traditional surgery. Now with the advent of the Robotic surgery, patients can be back to their normal life within a much shorter time compared to traditional surgery. Today, Robotic Surgery in gynecology is one of the fastest growing fields of robotic surgery.

Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in association with Vattikuti Foundation, a major global player with a specific focus in robotic surgery now has performed the most Advanced Gynecological Robotic Surgeries for first time in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Currently the Department of Gynecology at KIMS has successfully performed Sacrocolpopexy & Tubal Recanalisation using Robotic Assistance. This week KIMS is going to perform 40 Gynaecological Robotic Surgical procedures. The surgeries are performed by Prof. David Eisenstein, Senior Gynecological Robotic Surgeon from Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit U.S.A along with the expert team of the KIMS.

This is the less invasive option. Some gynecologic procedures enable surgeons to access the target anatomy using a vaginal approach, which may not require an external incision. But for complex hysterectomies and other gynecologic procedures, robot-assisted surgery is the most effective, least invasive treatment option now. Through tiny, 1-2 cm incisions, surgeons can operate with greater precision and control, minimizing the pain and risk associated with large incisions while increasing the likelihood of a fast recovery and excellent clinical outcomes.

With Robotic assistance now gynecologists can perform hysterectomies, myomectomies, urogynaecology / pelvic reconstructions, endometriosis, and lymph node biopsies. The need for large abdominal incisions is virtually eliminated informed Prof. Neena Desai, Senior Consultant Gynaecologist – KIMS.

The major advantage of Robotics assisted surgery is that the incisions made are tiny so the recovery from surgery is extremely quick.
