Sharp rise expected in number of coronary hear disease patients by 2015

NEW DELHI: Cases of coronary heart disease (CHD) between 2000 and 2015 are expected to nearly triple in India. While an estimated 2.7 crore Indians were suffering from CHD in 2000, the number is expected to increase to 6.15 crore by 2015, according to Union health ministry's latest national health profile projections 2010.

In 2005, India was estimated to have 3.5 crore CHD patients while in 2010, the number stood at 4.6 crores.

An interesting trend, according to the ministry's projections, is the stark increase in CHD cases in the age group of 20-29.

J&J Finds More Fake Diabetes Test Strips

Johnson & Johnson has discovered counterfeit versions of its diabetes test strips in India, as the health-care giant continues a long-running global battle to eradicate the fake products.

According to a notice posted online by J&J's LifeScan business last month, the products were made to resemble OneTouch Ultra blood-glucose test strips. The fake products lacked certain features, such as the OneTouch trademark printed on the test strips.

Less than half of India's population have access to iodised salt

NEW DELHI: Just about 1 in 3 people consume iodised salt in Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. While just less than half in Andhra Pradesh gets iodised salt, the number stands at just over half in Rajasthan, 60% in Orissa and 64% in Uttarakhand.

A report -- 'Iodized Salt Coverage Study 2010' -- conducted in rural households across eight states found that while use of adequately iodised salt had increased by 20% since the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) III conducted in 2005-06, the overall use in these states had reached just 47.3%.

India seeks postponement of decision on Endosulfan ban at Geneva

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: India is seeking a postponement of the decision on a global ban on Endosulfan to the next meeting of the conference of parties to the Stockholm Convention in 2013, according to observers.

C. Jayakumar and Dr. Mohammed Asheel, observers from Kerala to the ongoing conference of parties to the Convention in Geneva, said in an email message that India had distributed a draft of its proposal among the Asia Pacific group of countries seeking their support for the postponement.
