Indian doctors leaving the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) midway through their career might be barred from using the institute's name on their clinic boards or letters heads.
Officials said such advertisements actually resulted in "misuse of the institute's good name".
The proposal was brought up at the Institute Body (IB) meeting of the AIIMS on Thursday by some members. Health Secretary Naresh Dayal said, "We don't have a problem with doctors who have retired from AIIMS after completing their tenure and are now practising privately.
”But we are examining legally, whether we should allow doctors who have taken voluntary retirement to use their tenure at AIIMS as an advertising tool. In some countries, doctors have to take permission from institutes before doing so."
The Thursday meeting also took some crucial decisions, reports The Times of India. Students who have finished their final exams will now get their medical degrees even before the convocation ceremony in February, on request.
This will help them to apply in foreign or Indian universities on time for further studies. "They can also receive the degrees once again, formally, at the convocation," Dayal said.
It was agreed to let Dr T D Dogra (Head of the Department of Forensic Sciences) continue as the acting director of AIIMS till the Supreme Court gave its verdict on the status quo. Former director Dr P Venugopal was removed following the passage of the AIIMS (Amendment) Bill, 2007, fixing the retirement age of the director at 65 years. Dr Dogra is next to Dr Venugopal in seniority.
