A child with ADHD may have trouble sleeping at night. There may be several factors that are
causing this to happen. If this is a consistent problem, consult with their pediatrician to see what can be done about it.
Some medical experts have stated that lack of sleep among young children may be caused by the medications that they're taking. However, it is also a fact that those that do not take medication for this diagnosis have problems sleeping as well.
One thing that parents can do is to put their child on a schedule as to when they should go to sleep. This should be done whether they've be diagnosed with the disorder or not. Giving them a schedule can help them to be more structured.
Another thing they can do is to play music, preferably something soft like jazz or orchestra. Jazz music can be very soothing, especially when it's the instrumental type. This type of music can get their attention, but it also puts them in relaxed state where they just close their eyes and doze off. In addition to jazz music, they may want to have the child listen to background noise, such as a light wind or waves. Incorporating any of these techniques can be therapeutic for them.
Limit what they can drink as far as things that have caffeine. In fact, it may be a good idea to try and steer them away from that altogether, if possible. Do not allow them to make the television their home. Video games can be addictive, and they will stay there playing them all night long if you allow it.
Do not allow them to participate in a lot of physical activity prior to their bedtime. It can throw them off schedule and cause them difficulty in sleeping. You want to stick to the schedule every day, especially when they are in school. They need the proper rest in order to concentrate in their classes the next morning.
Parents can help their children maintain this by keeping the child consistent in what time they go to bed. Inconsistency doesn't help them and they can get frustrated and angry. They will not be able to sleep well and you will constantly have to fight with them about getting to bed.
Let them know up front what their schedule will be. That way, they will know what to do and it can help their cause on getting to sleep and getting enough rest.
