Are you depressed or do you know someone who is? Have you suffered in the past and dread the return of the black cloud? Is seems to me that very little is offered of a practical nature to help people deal with their depression.
When I started this research over 30 years ago the condition was still very much considered as a stigma. No-one wanted to admit to mental health problems. Thankfully most of us feel easier about admitting it to ourselves and a doctor, but still prefer to keep it away from our boss or fellow workers.
And isn't it odd how, when depressed we believe everyone else is happy, leading a full and enjoyable life when in actual fact more than half the population suffers from various forms of depression.
If we want to discover what creates most depression we don't have far to look. It is our internal voice, that voice which offers us criticism, doubt and fear. I want you to really understand something that is perhaps the most important news you will ever receive. We make our depression by the way we react to the world. It is our judgments, our opinions that punish us until we feel depressed.
Let me explain by using an example. It's what I call The Soap Opera Mind. This Soap Opera mentality can be seen every day on TV, where the actors take offense at an incident, which was nothing to do with them in the first place, but they create a strong opinion about it and share their annoyance with all and sundry. This winds up the other characters, and spreading like a disease, offers us entertainment. One uncharitable remark becomes exaggerated until, like Chinese Whispers, a whole imaginary world has been created full of mistaken meanings yet decorated with remarks destined to inflame the emotions of those unfortunate to hear them. This sort of thing happens every single day.
Stop the critical comments, begin to think the best of people and situations. Start to use the common sense you were born with, remember your thoughts create your emotions. Most of what we think is inaccurate. Now decide to become the person you would like to be rather than the one who allows any old situation to turn them into a weeping wretch. Decide now. Then choose to use this new knowledge in this way.
Understand that your imagination is stronger then your willpower. Use your imagination to create the wonderful world that you deserve. I don't mean living in a fantasy world, pretending you are a millionaire spending money you don't have. I don't mean pretending you are a brain surgeon and applying for a job that is way above your capabilities.
What I mean is this. Imagine you are clever, imagine you want to become a property developer, imagine you have enrolled in a college course. Imagine you have passed your exams, now see yourself receiving a diploma. See all these things in detail within your imagination. Then wake up to the opportunities around you. Go and find out what college courses there are. Say to your self that when I complete my college course I shall do such and such.
This is much more useful than saying to yourself that you will never be able to do anything because you hated school, got no money, too old, too young etc. I hope you can see the difference. Now is the time to begin to change your life one step at a time. Plan a way to the life you dream of. Learn how to be happy. No one can do it for you. It's up to you.
